You’d think that by now, after 13 years of leading creative writing workshops in the public schools of Chatham County, Deep’s Young Author Project (YAP) wouldn’t get so excited about celebrating the publication of a fresh semester of young writers. But new program manager Anthonella Alvarez and new site coordinators Chris Williams and Kat Scheuering are still as thrilled as a YAP program team has ever been, eager to celebrate the accomplishments and perseverance of a cohort of poets, playwrights, and novelists who wrote their way to greatness in the midst of another challenging school year spent battling the COVID-19 pandemic. In fact, the team is busy rolling out the red carpet for a totally new kind of YAP publication to lift up this group of brave voices: a zine.
But what is a zine? A form beloved of rebels and dreamers, the first zines were xeroxed and stapled together in basements and coffee shops, distributed without the help of big business. Modern zines have moved online, but they remain a plucky kind of publication for a plucky group of writers. “Since YAP workshops have been virtual for quite a while, why not try out a digital version of the book? We’re online, so let’s put it online,” Kat said. The publication is in full color for the first time ever, and in keeping with the spirit of guerilla publishing, the zine is free to read for the entire community. “The writing is amazing,” Anthonella enthused. “All our young people are super creative. When you read the zine, you get to learn something about them, what they’re passionate about.”
A successful semester of workshops and a new publication aren’t wins that happen in a vacuum. All three YAP team members were quick to highlight the invaluable work of YAP’s Writing Fellows, a group of volunteer workshop leaders who spend each week cheerleading, counseling, and fueling artistic fires, and of the public school teachers who support the program in both the foreground and the background. As the pandemic drags on, the YAP team feels that championing educators has become more important than ever. “It’s exhausting for the young people and exhausting for the teachers,” said Chris. “There’s no teacher education for a global pandemic to train you to teach young people remotely for two years. We appreciate the ones who stick it out after a full day of doing that and do 90 more minutes with us.”
Despite the global struggles of the past few years, YAP continues to bring together a core group of young people eager to embrace the workshop model week after week. “They really want to write,” Kat said. “I’m always impressed with how quick they are. They’re ready to throw something at you all the time.” And the virtual format has led to its own set of victories. Kat explained: “It’s allowing some people to come who otherwise might not. People who wouldn’t have come in person to a writing club after school are thriving virtually. And we’re able to bring tech and visuals every time. We have a huge variety of things we’re able to do.”
Access is expanding in more ways than one: young writers who for whatever reason can’t commit to an entire semester of weekly workshops can drop in and out, attending as their schedule allows. “Even if we only saw them once, we’re still happy they came and were able to be part of the semester,” Anthonella said. Embracing flexibility, celebrating wins both big and small, and innovating on its feet: the Young Author Project is thriving in challenging times—just like the zine itself.

Una Forma Amada por Rebeldes y Soñadores: El Joven Autor Project Zine
Uno pensaría que, a estas alturas, después de 13 años de liderar talleres de escritura creativa en las escuelas públicas del condado de Chatham, el Proyecto de Jóvenes Autores (YAP) de Deep no estaría tan emocionado por celebrar la publicación de un nuevo semestre de escritores jóvenes. Pero la nueva administradora de programas Anthonella Alvarez y los nuevos coordinadores del sitio Chris Williams y Kat Scheuering siguen estando tan encantados como jamás lo haya estado un equipo del programa YAP ansiosos por celebrar los logros y la perseverancia de un grupo de poetas, dramaturgos y novelistas que escribieron su camino hacia la grandeza en medio de otro año escolar desafiante que se pasaron luchando contra la pandemia de COVID-19. De hecho, el equipo está ocupado desplegando la alfombra roja para un tipo de publicación de YAP totalmente nuevo para levantar este grupo de voces valientes: una revista.
Pero, ¿qué es una revista? Un formato amado por rebeldes y soñadores, las primeras revistas fueron impresas y grapadas en sótanos y cafeterías, distribuidas sin la ayuda de los grandes negocios. Las revistas modernas se han movido en línea, pero siguen siendo un tipo de publicación valeroso para un grupo de escritores valerosos. “Debido a que los talleres de YAP han sido virtuales por un largo tiempo, ¿por qué no intentar una versión digital del libro? Estamos en línea, así que vamos a ponerla en línea”, dijo Kat. La publicación es por primera vez a todo color, y manteniendo el espíritu de la publicación de guerrilla, la revista es gratis para leer para la comunidad completa. “La escritura ha sido increíble”, dijo Anthonella entusiasmada. “Todos nuestros jóvenes son súper creativos. Cuando lees la revista, puedes aprender algo acerca de ellos, sobre lo que están apasionados”.
Un semestre exitoso de talleres y una nueva publicación no son victorias que suceden en el vacío. Los tres miembros del equipo de YAP se apresuraron a destacar el trabajo invaluable de los Becarios de Escritura de YAP, un grupo de líderes de talleres voluntarios que pasan cada semana animando, asesorando y alimentando fuegos artísticos, y de los maestros de escuelas públicas que apoyan el programa tanto en primer plano como en el trasfondo. Según la pandemia se extiende, el equipo de YAP siente que defender a los educadores se ha vuelto más importante que nunca. “Es agotador para los jóvenes y agotador para los maestros”, dijo Chris. “No hay educación para maestros que los prepare para una pandemia global que pueda capacitarles para educar a los jóvenes de manera remota por dos años. Apreciamos a aquellos que se mantienen firmes después de un día entero de hacer eso y luego hacen 90 minutos con nosotros”.
A pesar de las luchas globales de los últimos años, YAP continúa reuniendo a un grupo central de jóvenes ansiosos por adoptar el modelo de taller semana tras semana. “Ellos realmente quieren escribir”, dijo Kat. “Siempre me impresiona cuán rápido son. Están listos para mostrarte algo en cualquier momento”. Y el formato virtual ha llevado a que se logren su propio conjunto de victorias. Explicó Kat: “Les está permitiendo a algunas personas a participar que de otra manera quizás no podrían. Las personas que no habrían venido en persona a un club de escritura después de la escuela están prosperando de manera virtual. Y podemos incluir tecnología y material visual cada vez. Tenemos una gran variedad de cosas que podemos hacer”.
El acceso se está expandiendo en más de un sentido: los jóvenes escritores que por cualquier motivo no pueden comprometerse con un semestre completo de talleres semanales pueden entrar y salir, asistiendo según lo permita su horario. “Incluso si solo los vimos una vez, de cualquier manera, estamos felices de que vinieron y pudieron ser parte del semestre”, dijo Anthonella. Abrazar la flexibilidad, celebrar las victorias tanto grandes como pequeñas e innovar sobre la marcha: el Proyecto de Jóvenes Autores (Young Author Project) está prosperando en tiempos difíciles; al igual que la propia revista.
