Week by week, the songs took shape. Composers Dave Ragland and Patrick Vu brought their musical instincts: I’m hearing R&B. Should we try pop-punk? Listen to these piano bars. Six writers from Deep’s Block by Block program brought their words: Look at these lines again. Here’s what I imagined when I wrote this section. Should we add a chorus? And from this inaugural partnership, a new kind of poetry came into the world.

 The Savannah Voice Festival’s outreach coordinator Chad Sonka reached out to Deep Center in the summer of 2020, eager to try something new. He knew and admired the work Deep did in the Savannah community, and wanted to see if any of Deep’s young writers would be interested in working with SVF composers to turn their poems into songs. The answer was obvious—Deep youth are fearless and dedicated to their art, have performed on stages large and small, and embrace challenge and collaboration. During a program year forced mostly online by COVID-19, what better way to maintain a real and tangible connection to the community than a partnership like this one?

Composers joined Block by Block Zoom workshops once a month. They decamped to breakout rooms with their assigned young writers to discuss themes, emotions, and visions for each piece, and to present their musical progress for feedback from the writers. The end result? Six fully fledged songs complete with sheet music and live performances—but something more important, too. “The final songs and sheet music were amazing, of course, but what this partnership really gave to our young people was a look at exactly how healing creative expression can be and how far your passions can take you in life,” said Director of Youth Programs Ariel Felton. In the dark days of the pandemic, the partnership with Savannah Voice Festival handed Deep writers a new kind of loudspeaker, and they made use of it in powerful ways—Settie Lee even collaborated on turning her poem into a music video, complete with time spent at a recording studio and visuals shot at one of Block by Block’s community gardens.

Although this may have been the first time Deep youth linked their work with sheet music, the type of relationship they formed with the SFV composers struck a familiar chord. Collaboration is a fundamental tenant of Block by Block, and in a normal program year, youth would be creating group poems and skits to be performed onstage. Ariel was glad to see the SVF composers enter into the spirit of the program right away: “Each of the composers came with their own stories of how art helped them grow, and it was touching to hear composers say how much they related to our young people’s words—whether it was Settie’s piece about the simple joys of sunshine or Lincoln’s poem about dreaming of better, more equitable worlds.”

 Settie Lee and Lincoln Davidson, along with Ella “Bubbles” Zipperer, debuted their collaborative work at two separate live performances, a fundraiser event at the Davenport House in downtown Savannah and a private show at the Telfair Museum. Text of all song-poems will be published in the yearly Block by Block anthology alongside stylized representations of the accompanying sheet music, and will be available for purchase from Deep Center or local booksellers.

 Deep Teaching Artists are hopeful that this initial collaboration with the Savannah Voice Festival could become an ongoing partnership. “Deep’s goals are twofold: we encourage and connect youth to their voices and their stories, and at the same time we have a responsibility to lift up those voices and break the barriers to platforms,” Ariel said. “This is a project that I see not only teaching youth how important and valuable their voices are, but that it’s not just people at Deep who care about what they have to say—there’s a whole world out there that cares.”

La colaboración de Block by Block con el festival de Savannah Voice

Y de esta colaboración inaugural, nació un nuevo tipo de poesía.

 El coordinador de alcance del festival de Savannah Voice, Chad Sonka, contactó a Deep Center en el verano de 2020 deseoso de probar con algo nuevo. Como ya conocía y admiraba el trabajo de Deep en la comunidad de Savannah, quería ver si alguno de los jóvenes escritores de Deep estaría interesado en trabajar con los compositores del festival Savannah Voice (SVF por sus siglas en inglés) para convertir sus poemas en canciones. La respuesta fue evidente—los jóvenes de Deep no temen y están dedicados a su arte, han actuado en escenarios grandes y pequeños y asumen los desafíos y las colaboraciones. Los compositores participaban en los talleres de Block by Block en Zoom una vez al mes. Se dividieron en grupos con los jóvenes escritores asignados para hablar sobre los temas, las emociones y la visión de cada canción para luego mostrar su progreso musical a los escritores y escuchar su retroalimentación. ¿El resultado final? Seis canciones plenamente desarrolladas con sus partituras y actuaciones en vivo—pero también algo más importante. Ariel Felton, directora de los Programas para Jóvenes comento que por su puesto las canciones finales y las partituras son increíbles, pero lo que esta colaboración más ha aportado a los jóvenes es un vistazo a exactamente que tan sanador puede ser la expresión creativa de sanación y lo lejos que te pueden llevar tus pasiones en la vida. En los oscuros días de la pandemia, la colaboración con el festival de Savannah Voice ofreció a los escritores de Deep un nuevo tipo de altavoz y lo utilizaron de maneras muy potentes— Settie Lee incluso colaboró en el proceso de transformación de su poema en un vídeo musical donde trabajó en un estudio de grabación que se rodó en los jardines comunitarios de Block by Block.

A pesar de ser la primera vez que los jóvenes de Deep ligaron sus escritos con partituras musicales, el tipo de relación que cultivaron con los compositores de SFV ha sido conmovedora. La colaboración es una parte fundamental de Block by Block y, en un año de programación normal, los jóvenes estarían creando poemas en grupo y sketches para ser actuados sobre los escenarios. Ariel se alegró de ver que los compositores de SVF se sumaran al espíritu del programa inmediatamente y mencionó que cada uno de los compositores trajeron sus propias historias de cómo el arte les había ayudado a crecer. Incluso, que fue conmovedor escucharles decir lo mucho que se identificaban con los poemas de nuestros jóvenes— ya fuera el poema de Settie sobre la sencilla alegría del sol o el de Lincoln sobre cómo soñar con mundos mejores y más equitativos.

Settie Lee y Lincoln Davidson, junto a Ella “Bubbles” Zipperer, debutaron sus trabajos colaborativos en dos actuaciones en vivo distintas: un evento para recaudar fondos en Davenport House en el centro de Savannah y un espectáculo privado en el Museo Telfair. Las letras de todos los poemas-canciones serán publicadas en la antología anual de Block by Block junto a las representaciones estilizadas de la música con sus correspondientes partituras y se pondrán a la venta en el Deep Center o en las librerías locales.

Los Maestros Artistas de Deep desean que esta primera colaboración con el SVF pueda convertirse en algo habitual. Ariel comentó que el objetivo de Deep es doble: animar y conectar a la juventud con sus voces y sus historias y, al mismo tiempo, que tienen la responsabilidad de levantar esas voces y de romper las barreras en las distintas plataformas. Este proyecto no solo enseña a los jóvenes sobre la importancia y el valor de sus voces, menciona Ariel, sino que les demuestra que lo que tienen que decir no solo le importa a la gente de Deep —hay un mundo entero al que le importa.
