On a recent Friday afternoon, the halls of Savannah High pulsed with energy as young people lined up to join the Open Mic hosted by the Deep Flows slam poetry team. This is a new literacy initiative taking place at four SCCPSS high schools. Check out a video here!
“The young people in Savannah’s high schools are overflowing with artistic desires and a whole lot of whimsy. These open mics have opened up their minds to a whole new world to explore,” said Jezmin Daniels, Deep’s Program Coordinator. From poems to songs, each student brought their own creativity and inspiration to the room.
Our young people in the Savannah community are brimming with talent, and we are honored to provide them a space to share amongst their peers. “Kaymira, a student at Savannah High, performed one of their own songs on the mic for the first time. People were singing along and everything. It was so much fun to see them light up the whole room with what felt like a newfound energy. That’s what it’s all about,” Jezmin continued.

Deep hosts Open Mic events at schools across Savannah to build community, elevate local talent, and spark inspiration in other young people. These events give voice to Savannah’s stories of identity, joy, injustice, belonging, and transformation. Participating schools are Savannah High, Woodville-Thompkins, Beach High, and Windsor Forest, where Open Mics are held once per month on Fridays during each school’s lunch period.
Deep’s Open Mics highlight the vast talent and creativity of Savannah’s youth, showcasing the brilliance already present in our community. As Deep Flows continues to host more at high schools around the city, Deep aims to cultivate a community of young artists that fosters joy and transformation, and is building toward a community-wide teen slam competition in late May of this year. More details are coming soon!
