Deep staff members are dedicated to championing and uplifting the voices and perspectives of young people, and our team of experts is expanding once more: meet Crystal Bridges, Deep’s newest Life Navigator.

Crystal grew up here in Savannah and graduated from Savannah State University. She has worked in a diverse array of fields, including real estate, marketing, and sales, but her true passion has always been community involvement. She has been a fixture at open sessions of local government and nonprofit events throughout the city, as well as an important voice in community organizing. “I care about the improvement of the quality of life for people who are of different backgrounds, whether it’s people with different gender identities or impoverished backgrounds or other people who are marginalized. I know that there are systems in place that impact marginalized people. If there’s a way I can change things or make a difference, I want to be able to do that,” Crystal explained.

It was through community organizing that Crystal got to know Deep’s work for the first time. She had long hoped to make the jump from corporate jobs to the nonprofit world, and Deep seemed like the perfect place to put her values into action. “Being able to try to make a difference in our society, starting with the City of Savannah, is something I’ve been wanting to do for some time—being able to not just have these values and talk about them but also use the things I care about as a means for my life. This was my opportunity to do that,” she said. As one of Deep’s Life Navigators, Crystal primarily works with systems-involved youth in the Work Readiness Enrichment Program (WREP). Created to reduce the number of youth being committed to the Department of Juvenile Justice, WREP is a collaboration between the Chatham County Juvenile Courts, the Savannah–Chatham County Public School System, and Deep Center.

In WREP, Crystal sees herself filling an important mentoring role. “I want to inspire them to believe in themselves and help them learn why it’s important to have self-love,” she said. “I want to tell them it’s worth it find alternatives, to find better solutions. You are worth so much more than what someone might tell you.” Life Navigators help with school work, offer emotional support, connect young people and their families to important resources, and provide guidance on topics like managing money and finding employment. Crystal is particularly passionate about the importance of financial literacy, and is looking forward to imparting those skills to WREP’s cohort of young people.

Crystal is a singer, a creative, and the author of a self-published collection of poetry—but most of all, she’s someone eager to work toward a more just and equitable Savannah. “People don’t think of all the policies in place to keep marginalized people at a disadvantage,” she said. “It’s so refreshing to be around people who are not just thinking these things but actually trying to do something about it and make things better in the world. Deep has already done a lot of great work, and I’m excited about the work I can do for people through Deep.” We’re excited too, Crystal. Welcome to Deep!

Crystal creció aquí en Savannah y se graduó de la Universidad Estatal de Savannah. Fue a través del trabajo organizativo que Crystal llegó a conocer el trabajo de Deep por primera vez. Por un largo tiempo, ella había tenido la esperanza dar el salto de trabajos corporativos al mundo sin fines de lucro, y Deep pareció ser el lugar perfecto para poner sus valores en acción. “Ser capaz de tratar de lograr una diferencia en nuestra sociedad, comenzando con la Ciudad de Savannah, es algo que he querido hacer desde hace algún tiempo: ser capaz de no solo de tener estos valores y hablar de ellos, sino también de usar las cosas que me importan como un medio de vida. Esta fue mi oportunidad para hacer eso”, dijo ella. Como una asesora de Vida Práctica de Deep, Crystal primeramente trabaja con jóvenes involucrados en los sistemas en el Programa de Enriquecimiento de Preparación para el Trabajo (WREP, por sus siglas). Creado para reducir el número de jóvenes que están siendo enviados al Departamento de Justicia Juvenil, WREP es una colaboración entre los Tribunales Juveniles del Condado de Chatham, el Sistema de Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Savannah-Chatham, y Deep Center.

En WREP, Crystal se ve cumpliendo un rol importante como mentora. “Quiero inspirarles a creer en ellos mismos y ayudarles a aprender por qué es importante tener amor propio”, dijo ella. “Quiero decirles que vale la pena encontrar alternativas, encontrar mejores soluciones. Que ellos valen mucho más de lo que alguna persona puede decirles”. Cada asesor de Vida Práctica ayuda con las asignaciones de la escuela, ofrece apoyo emocional, conecta a los jóvenes y a sus familias con recursos importantes, y provee guía acerca de temas tales como administrar el dinero y encontrar empleo. Crystal tiene una pasión particular en la educación financiera y su importancia, y está entusiasmada de poder impartir esas habilidades al cohorte de jóvenes de WREP.

Crystal es una cantante, persona creativa y autora de una colección autopublicada de poesía; pero por encima de todo, ella es alguien que está deseosa por trabajar por una Savannah más justa y equitativa, “Las personas no piensan en todas las políticas que están establecidas para mantener a las personas marginalizadas en desventaja”, dijo ella. “Es tan refrescante estar rodeada de personas que no solo están pensando estas cosas sino que también están tratando de hacer algo acerca de esto y hacer que las cosas sean mejor en este mundo. Deep ya ha realizado mucho trabajo excelente, y estoy emocionada por el trabajo que puedo hacer para las personas a través de Deep”. ¡También estamos emocionados, Crystal! ¡Bienvenida a Deep!
