Marisa Pierce, Deep Center’s new Director of Youth Programs, has a hundred stories to tell. Born one-third of a set of triplets and raised right here in Savannah, Marisa is a classically trained vocalist who has worked both in higher education and in helping youth aging out of the foster system secure safe housing. Here at Deep, Marisa will be overseeing the Apprenticeship program, Drop-In, and Deep’s partnership in the Work Readiness Enrichment Program (WREP), and she’s eager to get started. “Deep provides an outlet for youth in our community where they can find themselves or find their voice, and I love that,” Marisa said. “I vibe with the culture and the values and the mission.”
Growing up in Savannah, Marisa attended both Jenkins and Savannah Arts, and her passion for theater and singing fostered an enduring love of arts education. Her mother made sure all three triplets were kept plenty occupied after school, so Marisa remembers shuttling between Girl Scouts, singing ensembles, and cultural arts groups. “I know and understand the importance of having a program to do, to nurture who I was and figure out my personality and dislikes and likes,” Marisa said. The memories of these experiences in her youth drew her to Deep as an adult: “Deep is able to provide those after-school programs. It’s a safe space; you are with trusted adults who care and nurture your individuality. It builds your sense of self,” she said.
Marisa attended Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, for her undergraduate degree, and when she returned to Savannah with her husband and children, she completed a masters in adult education and community leadership from Armstrong University. Around that time, Marisa started volunteering with and then working for Gilliard and Company, a nonprofit dedicated to serving youth aging out of the foster system, who often have few resources and strongholds of support after they turn 18. Marisa was named director of the nonprofit’s housing program, where her history in property management allowed her to connect youth to safe and stable housing. “For every negative situation, there can also be a positive, but there has to be opportunity and space to make that happen,” Marisa explained.
And creating spaces for those opportunities requires digging deep. “There’s a level of vulnerability connected to authenticity. You have to be in it for the right reasons,” Marisa said. “There’s a measure of accountability you have to have when working with young adults. You can’t just be the fun auntie. I have high expectations because I know the youth can succeed.” At Deep, Marisa will be overseeing Deep’s Apprenticeship program, which allows older Deep youth to receive payment and training as assistant teaching artists; Deep’s Drop-In program, which brings trauma-informed and culturally responsive creative workshops to systems-impacted youth around Savannah; and Deep’s partnership in WREP, a collaboration between Deep Center, the Juvenile Courts, and the Savannah–Chatham County Public School System that serves justice-involved youth.
Marisa brings a strong history of community care to her new role at Deep, and a powerful sense of community pride. “I have a goal to highlight what Savannah has,” she said. “I want to show that you don’t have to move away to be a success story for our community. My heart has always been for the community and for young adults.” Marisa is already jumping into her new role feet-first, and has immediate goals of reinforcing and expanding the number of partnerships and local connections made in the programs on her list. “I’m excited to bring Savannah to Savannah,” she said. Nuevo personal: Conoce a Marisa Pierce
Marisa Pierce, la nueva directora de Programas para Jóvenes de Deep Center, tiene cientos de historias que contar. Marisa, quien es parte de un set de trillizos y se crió aquí mismo en Savannah, es una vocalista con educación clásica que ha trabajado tanto en educación superior y en ayudar a los jóvenes que al cumplir la mayoría de edad quedan fuera del sistema de hogares de acogida a conseguir vivienda segura. Aquí en Deep, Marisa estará supervisando el Programa de Pasantías Pagadas, llamado Drop-In, y la colaboración de Deep en el Programa de Enriquecimiento de Preparación para el Trabajo (WREP, por sus siglas en inglés), y está entusiasmada con comenzar. “Deep provee un lugar de escape para los jóvenes en nuestra comunidad en donde pueden encontrarse a sí mismos o encontrar sus propias voces, y eso me encanta”, dijo Marisa. “Yo vibro con la cultura y los valores, y la misión”.
Cuando estaba creciendo en Savannah, Marisa asistió tanto a Jenkins como Savannah Arts, y su pasión por el teatro y por cantar fomentó un amor duradero por la educación de arte. Su madre se aseguró de que los trillizos se mantuvieran bastante ocupados después de la escuela, así que Marisa recuerda estar yendo y viniendo entre las Girl Scouts, participar en coros, y grupos culturales y de arte. “Yo conozco y entiendo la importancia de tener un programa para hacer, para fomentar quien yo era y descubrir mi personalidad y las cosas que no me gustaban y las que me gustaban”, dijo Marisa. Los recuerdos de estas experiencias en su juventud la atrajeron a Deep ya como adulta: “Deep puede proveer esos programas después de la escuela. Es un lugar seguro; estás con adultos confiables a quienes les importas y fomentan tu individualidad. Construye su sentido de ellos mismos”, dijo ella.
Marisa asistió a Wesleyan College en Macon, Georgia, para su licenciatura, y cuando regresó a Savannah con su esposo e hijos, completó una maestría en educación para adultos y liderazgo comunitario de la Universidad Armstrong. Durante ese tiempo, Marisa comenzó a hacer trabajo voluntario, y luego comenzó a trabajar, con Gilliard y’ Company, una organización sin fines de lucro dedicada a brindar servicio a jóvenes que al cumplir la mayoría de edad quedan fuera del sistema de hogares de acogida, quienes con frecuencia tienen pocos recursos y personas que les apoyen después de llegar a la mayoría de edad. Marisa fue nombrada directora del programa de vivienda de la organización sin fines de lucro en donde su historial con la administración de propiedades le permitió conectar a los jóvenes con viviendas seguras y estables. “Por cada situación negativa, también puede haber una positiva, pero tiene que haber la oportunidad y el espacio para hacer que eso pase”, explicó Marisa.
Y crear espacios para esas oportunidades requiere profundizar. “Hay un nivel de vulnerabilidad que está conectado a la autenticidad. Tienes que estar dentro por las razones apropiadas”, dijo Marisa. “Hay una medida de responsabilidad que debes tener cuando trabajas con adultos jóvenes. No puedes simplemente ser una tía divertida. Tengo expectativas altas porque yo sé que los jóvenes pueden tener éxito”. En Deep, Marisa estará supervisando el Programa de Pasantías Pagadas Drop-In, lo cual le permite a los jóvenes mayores de Deep recibir pagos y capacitarse como artistas instructores asistentes; el programa Drop-In de Deep, el cual ofrece talleres creativos informados por el trauma y culturalmente receptivos a jóvenes impactados por los sistemas alrededor de Savannah; y la sociedad de Deep en WREP, una colaboración entre Deep Center, los Tribunales Juveniles, y el Sistema de Escuelas Públicas del Condado de Savannah–Chatham que brinda servicios a jóvenes involucrados en el sistema judicial.
Marisa trae un historial sólido de empatía al cuidado de la comunidad a su nuevo rol en Deep, y un sentido poderoso de orgullo comunitario. “Tengo un objetivo para destacar lo que tiene Savannah”, aseguró. “Quiero mostrar que no tienes que mudarte para ser una historia de éxito para tu comunidad. Mi corazón siempre ha sido para la comunidad y para los jóvenes adultos”. Marisa ya está metiéndose de lleno en su nuevo rol, y tiene objetivos inmediatos para reforzar y expandir la cantidad de colaboraciones y conexiones locales hechas en los programas en la lista. “Estoy emocionada de traerle a Savannah a Savannah”, dijo ella.
