In July of 2022, Deep Center was named a Southern Cultural Treasure by the venerable Atlanta-based nonprofit South Arts. Deep is one of only 17 arts organizations across the Southeast—all serving and led by BIPOC communities—to receive the title and a share of the $6 million in grant money, and the pride we feel in joining such a cohort is profound. South Arts is shining a spotlight on the transformation Deep is creating in our part of the world, proving yet again that making Savannah a more just and equitable place is not an illusory vision but a concrete reality we are building with each passing year. Support provided by organizations like South Arts is critical to furthering Deep’s mission, but even without honors and awards, Deep would still be here empowering Savannah’s young people to thrive as learners, community leaders, and agents of change. “It’s nice to be recognized by South Arts,” said Director of Youth Programs Ariel Felton, “and the most important thing for Deep is our relationships on the ground.”
The relationships Deep forms within and outside of our various programming spaces are our anchor. Explained Ariel: “We have a lot of creative people on staff who are inside the workshops day in and day out with our young people, and we see the real benefit of mentor relationships in their lives. We see the benefit of encouraging youth to use their voices and become leaders in their communities. We’re working to create cycles of community leaders who are from Savannah who have a stake in the art and the communities they are creating.” That leadership cycle is a goal of every semester of programming, especially given Deep’s regional context. “We’re showing young people you can be an artist who has an effect on the communities in the South,” Ariel said. “You don’t have to go somewhere else to have your voice heard.”
Like all Southern Cultural Treasures organizations, Deep champions the South and the people who call it home. It is because we love where we live that we work so hard to build a better future for our neighbors, and why we celebrate the beauty of the lives and lifestyles all around us. “I’m Georgia born and raised, and I love the South,” Ariel said. “Southern culture is so important to the art our young people create. You can feel the Southernness in it when a young person is writing about growing up in Savannah and their culture’s traditions. It’s important to uplift our stories.”
As Director of Youth Programming, Ariel spends every day working to refine and support the creative power that can always be found in a Deep workshop space. “I make sure the staff on the ground have the resources they need to get the vision done. That can look like everything from finding workshop locations to evaluating our programs to proving to funders that the work Deep is doing matters and has benefit in our community,” Ariel said. But the very best days are when Ariel gets to visit the workshops themselves to interact with the young people and experience their writing firsthand. “I wish I had a program like this when I was younger,” Ariel said. “Someone to say your voice is important and not silly even though you’re 15. Being in our workshops is a great reminder of the magic that’s happening.”
Deep’s record of success in Savannah speaks for itself. In the past year alone, we’ve provided over 2,200 hours of high-quality programming to youth and adults across Chatham County, and we’re only getting started. “I love how much Deep has grown,” Ariel said. “The work we’re doing is necessary and transformative for our community, and I want to uplift the fact that Deep Center is really a community organization. The decisions we make are based off what we hear from young people and the adult allies in Savannah, all with the undercurrent of writing and creative arts. If that applies to you, check us out!”

Un tesoro cultural sureño: palabras del director de programas juveniles, Ariel Felton
En julio de 2022, Deep Center fue nombrado como Tesoro Cultural del Sur (Southern Cultural Treasure) por la organización sin fines de lucro con base en Atlanta, llamada South Arts (Arte del Sur). Deep es una de solo 17 organizaciones de arte en todo el sureste (todas que prestan servicio y están lideradas por comunidades de personas negras, indígenas y de color) en recibir una parte de los 6 millones de dólares en dinero de subvención, y el orgullo que sentimos en unirnos a dicho grupo es profundo. South Arts está apuntando un cañón de luz a la transformación que Deep está creando en nuestra parte del mundo, probando otra vez que hacer de Savannah un lugar más justo y equitativo no es una visión ilusa sino una realidad concreta que estamos construyendo con cada año que pasa. El apoyo que proveen organizaciones como South Arts es de suma importancia para avanzar la misión de Deep, pero aún sin los honores y premios, Deep seguiría estando aquí para empoderar a los jóvenes de Savannah para que prosperen como estudiantes, líderes comunitarios, y agentes de cambio. “Es agradable ser reconocidos por South Arts”, dijo la directora de programas para jóvenes Ariel Felton, “y lo más importante para Deep son nuestras relaciones en el campo con la comunidad”.
Las relaciones que forma Deep dentro y fuera de nuestros varios espacios de programación son nuestra ancla. Ariel explica lo siguiente: “Tenemos muchas personas creativas en el personal las cuales están dentro de los talleres día tras día con nuestros jóvenes, y vemos el beneficio real de las relaciones con los mentores en sus vidas. Vemos el beneficio de estimular a los jóvenes a usar sus voces y convertirse en líderes en sus comunidades. Estamos trabajando para crear ciclos de líderes comunitarios que son de Savannah y tienen interés en el arte y en las comunidades que están creando”. Ese ciclo de liderazgo es un objetivo de cada semestre de programación, especialmente dado el contexto regional de Deep. “Les estamos mostrando a los jóvenes que puedes ser un artista que tiene un efecto en las comunidades en el sur”, dijo Ariel. “No tienes que irte a ningún otro lado para que se escuche tu voz”.
Como todas las organizaciones que han sido nombradas Tesoros Culturales del Sur, Deep defiende el Sur y las personas que lo llaman hogar. Es debido a que amamos el lugar donde vivimos que trabajamos tan duro para construir un mejor futuro para nuestros vecinos, y el por qué celebramos la belleza de las vidas y estilos de vida que nos rodean a todos nosotros. “Soy nacida y criada en Georgia, y amo el sur”, dijo Ariel. “La cultura sureña es tan importante para el arte que crean nuestros jóvenes. Puedes sentir el espíritu sureño en esas expresiones artísticas cuando una persona joven está escribiendo sobre crecer en Savannah y las tradiciones de su cultura. Es importante elevar nuestras historias”.
Como directora del Programa de Jóvenes, Ariel pasa cada día trabajando para refinar y apoyar el poder creativo que siempre puede ser encontrado en un espacio de taller de Deep. “Me aseguro que el personal en el campo tenga los recursos que necesita para lograr ejecutar la visión. Eso puede manifestarse de múltiples maneras desde encontrar locales para talleres, a evaluar nuestros programas, hasta probarle a los financiadores que el trabajo que Deep está haciendo es importante y tiene beneficio en nuestra comunidad”, afirma Ariel. Pero los mejores días son cuando Ariel puede visitar los talleres e interactuar con los jóvenes y experimentar su escritura de primera mano. “Me gustaría haber tenido un programa como este cuando era más joven”, dijo Ariel. “Alguien que dijera ‘tu voz es importante’ y no tonta a pesar de que tienes 15 años. Estar en nuestros talleres es un gran recordatorio de la magia que está sucediendo”.
El historial de éxito de Deep en Savannah habla por sí solo. Solo en el último año, hemos proporcionado más de 2,200 horas de programación de alta calidad a jóvenes y adultos de todo el condado de Chatham, y solo estamos comenzando. “Me encanta cuanto ha crecido Deep”, afirma Ariel. “El trabajo que estamos haciendo es necesario y transformador para nuestra comunidad, y quiero resaltar el hecho de que Deep Center es realmente una organización comunitaria.
