If dealing with the coronavirus has taught us anything, it’s that dramatic changes to routine and sudden isolation can leave people feeling unstable and disconnected from their communities. In fact, due to the ongoing pandemic and the need for social distancing, Block by Block, Deep Center’s year-long program for creative writing, leadership, and community-building, has been completely virtual since October 2020.

We didn’t let that stop us though.

This year’s theme – health equity – is the perfect lens to explore the challenges of the past year. As always, Block by Block strives to answer the question: How is the community I live in affecting who I am becoming? Though we couldn’t take to the streets of Savannah to interview and investigate the issues plaguing our community, young people were still able to use their passion for writing and art to design creative solutions to the isolation and loneliness a lot of us are experiencing over the past 12 months.

Young artists explored the topic in a variety of artistic genres: visual art, prose, and audio.

PROSE:

The prose group conducted interviews with two local mental health professionals — Bridget Cross (listentomoms.org) and Linton F. Hester (livebetternow.us) — about ways the pandemic has affected their different fields and how others can boost mental health even during stressful times. A portion of the interview was published in Savannah Morning News, and you can read the full interview here.

AUDIO:

The audio group crafted a unique meditation and healing playlist after having a critical discussion on how sound can affect spiritual, physical, and mental health. These young artists shared songs that have helped them through hard times, captured soundscapes, and worked closely with the visual group to complete the cover.

VISUAL:

Finally, visual artists chose positive affirmations to illustrate and share with their communities. Artists could choose to design the actual words in beautiful calligraphy, or create a drawing that represented their affirmation.
