Deep Center, in partnership with the College of Education at Georgia Southern University, has opened registration for Interrupting the Script, Inviting Wonder Unconference, Deep Center’s 2025 Unconference, which will be held on Saturday, November 1st, from 11 AM to 4 PM at Georgia Southern University’s Armstrong Campus.

Why an “UNconference”

If you ever had an idea about how something about education could be different, but then thought, “That’s not my lane, maybe someone else will do it,” or “It simply can’t be done?”

If you’ve ever wondered how to make your school or classroom a more desirable place for students and educators?

…Then, the Unconference is the place for you!

Join us for a day of burnout-busting creative and critical activities exploring how we can create learning and teaching environments where everyone is engaged, valued, and set up for success.

 

What is it?

The Unconference is one component of Deep Center’s programs for educators who share our commitment to fostering educational experiences where each person,  including teachers, along with young people and family members, is valued in their full and complex humanity. “What the Unconference offers is a chance to be ‘imaginative and playful about how schools could look and feel while being clear-eyed about the day-to-day realities and necessities of being an educator” said Mel Kutner,   Director of Restorative Practice and Culture.

Interrupting the Script, Inviting Wonder  It will be a day that breaks from the “business as usual” model of professional development as well as the “business as usual” routine of school by inviting educators to engage in creative and critical activities that address their whole-selves while exploring how we can create the learning and teaching environments where everyone feels engaged, valued, and set up for success. 

At the unconference, we don’t just tell you – we show you, with concrete examples and lessons learned from SCCPSS educators and leaders.  Unconference participants will be invited to take part in 

  • Creative Exploration: Hands-on “art class” activities to ignite imagination.
  • STEM & Literacy Labs: Instructional activities led by SCCPSS educators and leaders.
  • Lunch-n-Learn: Insider conversations on navigating the education system.
  • Relationship Building: Opportunities to connect and build relationships with local educators.
  • Mindfulness & Restorative Practices: Guided tools for well-being and resilience.
  • Instructional Resources: Model visuals that create a welcoming and engaging environment, cool-down corner strategies, and relationship-building activities.

The event is free and can be used as professional development credit.  Participants may receive up to $50 to support their participation. More information can be found in the registration form.  

  • The Unconference is completely free! 
  • Snacks and a light lunch will be provided. 
  • If there is anything we can provide you (e.g. an attendance certificate, conference agenda, or completed form) so that your participation will count towards your professional learning requirements, we are committed to doing so.
