Derrick L. Butler serves as the Chief Academic Officer for Teaching and Learning with Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools, where he provides executive leadership for districtwide academic programs and initiatives.
With more than two decades of experience in education, Derrick has served as a teacher, principal, and district leader. His work centers on strengthening instructional practice, developing leaders, and using data to guide improvement efforts. He is also a Certified Restorative Practices Trainer, supporting teams in building strong culture, accountability, and relationships. In addition to his district role, Derrick serves as a Leadership Consultant with Coastal GLRS and First District RESA, where he partners with principals and district leaders across the region to strengthen systems and supports for students with disabilities. Derrick’s commitment to community leadership includes previous service as a neighborhood association board member and the Education Chairman for the 100 Black Men of Savannah, where he supported mentoring initiatives and educational programming focused on improving outcomes and expanding opportunities for youth.
He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Middle Grades Education, a Master’s in Higher Education Administration, and a Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from Georgia Southern University. Derrick has also completed advanced leadership training through Harvard University’s Institute for Superintendents and District Leaders and Howard University’s AASA Urban Superintendents Academy.
