“Basically, I want to discuss some things, like where I will end up at the end of the day.” Deep has been teaching, writing, and building community for over two years now, and we’ve done our best to accomplish our ambitious mission statement . Along with the wonderful teachers at Hubert Middle School, we helped raise the Hubert students’ writing test scores 24 points . We published a book of lesson plans: The Cure for IDK: 36 writing lessons to make your students LOL . Our fearless executive director, Catherine Killingsworth, has spoken at two great venues: the Pechakucha Night: Savannah and the 2010 TEDxCreativeCoast Conference . This past Spring semester, we expanded to twelve schools—the Spring 2011 Student Anthology Book Release is on June 11 at S.P.A.C.E Gallery at 7 p.m . We are also trying a different approach to our summer semester. Instead of one workshop a week at scattered locations, we are holding workshops five days a week at two locations: The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Coastal Empire—Frank Callen Unit and the West Broad YMCA. We are proud of what we’ve accomplished, and we are proud of the community that we have created. However, we know that there is more work to do! In an effort to continue building our—and your—community, we will use this blog to post upcoming events—our own, and others in Savannah that we recommend—lessons plans from our curriculum book, ideas about education and writing, and how we are spending the money that you have generously donated. Also, follow us on Facebook and Twitter Because, really, at the end of the day, we just want to end up together. We hope that you will join us. |
