Savannah Morning News writer, Kristopher Monroe, published a piece about Deep being named one of only 57 recipients of the 2019 NEA Our Town grant, featuring interviews with Deep staff members.
Chatham County has nearly twice the number of court-involved youth of any county in Georgia, according to Dukes, which is why Deep decided to tackle what they are referring to as transformational systems change, utilizing tools like art and community networking.
“What we’re hoping to advance is this transformational idea where the conversation is happening way upstream and everybody is involved,” Dukes said. “And it’s around shifting culture and systems so that we’re supporting young people from the very beginning, so they don’t need intervention to keep them out of court.”
